In
1800 Sulpice Debauve, a pharmacist/apothecarist
to King Louis XVI, opened his first chocolate
shop on the left bank of Paris. Debauve's
chocolate creations and innovations were immediately
praised by the most influential figures in
France.
Debauve & Gallais
was appointed the official chocolatier of
Louis XVIII, Charles X and Louis Philippe.
They also had a following within the Russian
court, the tsars traditionally favoring the
99% dark chocolates as an accompaniment to
their strongest vodkas.
In honor of King
Louis XVI, king of France
and husband to queen Marie Antoinette, here
is the
most decadent of our Museum collection. The
Louis XVI
contains the Royal 70 assorted bonbons, Pistoles
de Marie
Antoinette collection, Les Annes Folles (contains
all of the fruit
and ginger aiguelletes), assortment of our
bouchees, Carres,
and Mini-Tablettes.
